RADFORD, Va. – Radford seniors Sarah Himan and Hope Creasy were sent off in style in their final home game as the Highlanders (26-10) defeated Virginia Tech, 9-3 Wednesday evening from RU Softball Field.

Creasy and Himan combined to go 3-for-5 with five RBI against the Hokies (16-27). In doing so, they helped Radford complete the program's first perfect home season at 16-0. It also extended the Highlanders winning streak to 10 and home streak to 17.

Creasy was 2-for-2 with three RBI. She also homered to put the Highlanders up 1-0 in the fourth. It was her 10th of the season and 30th of her career, tying her for second all-time at Radford, one behind Melissa Pickel's (1995-97, '99) mark of 31.

Himan was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, extending her hitting streak to 10 games.

On this special night, both seniors, who were recognized prior to the game, were able to play in front of several friends and family. The moms, Pat Himan and Tammy Creasy, threw out ceremonial first pitches.

Just prior to that, Himan's oldest brother Lance Corporal Joshua Himan, who was severly injured in Afghanistan on Sept. 29 was recognized for his service to the United States and was presented a signed ball by two fellow Marines and President Penelope W. Kyle.

“This was a great day of celebration,” said head coach Mickey Dean. “To win the game tonight was a bonus after the celebration of our seniors and Josh (Himan).”

Creasy broke a scoreless deadlock with one out in the fourth, lining a solo home run to leftfield.

The Hokies answered in the top of the fifth on a leadoff long ball to dead centerfield by Misty Hall.

Radford exploded for four two-out runs in the fifth. Kristen Shifflett started the two-out rally with a single to right. Three straight walks, the third by Shannon Keefe, put the Highlanders ahead 2-1.

Creasy stepped up a ripped a two-run single to left. On the throw home, a collision at the plate between Himan and Hokie catcher Courtney Liddle allowed Keefe to score the fourth run of the inning.

“I'm proud of the seniors and this team,” commented Dean. “I was more nervous during the pregame festivities than I was for the actual game.”

A leadoff infield single by Bkaye Smith and a double by Richelle McGarva cut Radford's lead to 5-2. The Hokies threatened to put more on the board, but Chelsea Kelley struck out Kristen Graham with McGarva on third.

The Highlanders tacked on four more in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run bases loaded double by Himan. Lauren Williams knocked in run with a double and the fourth came courtesy of a ground out.

Virginia Tech pushed across a run in the seventh and loaded the bases with no outs, but Kellie Snooks came in and slammed the door shut as she induced three pop ups to end the game.

Kelley improved to 16-5 overall. She went six-plus innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Shifflett went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Highlanders.

Smith recorded two of the Hokies' seven hits. Kenzie Roark suffered the defeat, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits. She walked five and struck out three in 5.2 innings.

Radford hits the road for a three game series at Coastal Carolina, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
