BOONE, N.C. – Radford split in its regular season finale at Appalachian State winning game one, 7-3 and falling in the nightcap 8-7.
Radford (33-15) opened up a 5-0 lead on the Moutaineers (24-25) after two innings and went on to win game one, 7-3.
Kristen Shifflett and
Michelle Beall each recorded a pair of hits.
Shifflett and
Sarah Himan knocked in a pair of runs.
Beall, along with her twin sister
Nichole Beall, left the yard. It was the first time this season and second in their careers the sisters have homered in the same game. Nichole's tied the single season mark of 16 held by Shifflett.
Radford struck for a run in the top of the first on a RBI single by
Shannon Keefe. Shifflett rocketed a lead off single to center and stole second with one out. She came around to score on Keefe's single that was just out of the reach of the leaping shortstop.
The first four batters of the second recorded hits as the Highlanders extended their lead to 5-0.
Michelle Beall led off with a long ball to left. Back-to-back singles, followed by a Shifflett two-run triple off the high right field fence made it 4-0. Himan capped off the scoring with a RBI single to center.
The Mountaineers tallied a run in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI double to left by Michelle Gorzelle.
Nichole Beall's record tying home run, a mammoth shot over the scoreboard in left center, came with two out in the fourth.
ASU cut Radford's lead in half, 6-3, with two runs in the fifth on a RBI single Megan Rebielak and a wild pitch.
The Highlanders pushed their lead to 7-3 without a hit in the seventh.
Nichole Beall reached on an error to start the inning. She stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored standing up on Himan's high fly to center.
Chelsea Kelley improved to 21-6 with the complete game victory. She scattered seven hits and struck out seven.
Hannah Dow's two-out walk-off single in the seventh provided Appalachian State with the come from behind game two victory.
The Highlanders led 7-6 after
Michelle Beall launched her second long ball of the day halfway up the roof of the indoor practice facility putting Radford back on top, 7-6 in the top of the seventh.
In the Mountaineers final at bat, they loaded the bases with no outs. McKenzie Phillips tied the game with a sac fly to center.
After another intentional to load the bases, Kelley induced Michelle Lighton to pop up to second. With a 1-0 count, Dow lofted a deep fly ball to the fence left that just tipped off the glove of a leaping
Lauren Williams.
Shifflett finished the game, 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Himan,
Michelle Beall and Williams each registered two of Radford's 12 hits.
Kelley suffered the loss in relief. She allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
A sac fly by Katie Boyd gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
In the top of the second,
Michelle Beall tied the game as she and Williams executed a first and third double steal with two outs. Shifflett then laced a double to center to put the Highlanders on top, 2-1.
Hope Creasy's (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) third of three straight singles to start the third inning gave Radford a 3-1 advantage. The Highlanders added another run in the fourth on a throwing error with two outs.
The Mountaineers took a 6-4 lead with five runs, four of them unearned, highlighted by home runs by Meghan Smith (leadoff) and Katie Boyd. Boyd's three-run blast to center put ASU on top.
Himan knotted the game at 6-6 with a two-run round tripper, her 11th of the season, with one out in the sixth.
Radford will begin defense of its 2009 conference title when it takes part in the 2010 Big South Softball Championship hosted by Coastal Carolina, May 13-15 at CCU Softball Field.
The Highlanders, who won their second consecutive regular season championship, will play the winner of game between the No.4 and 5 seeds at 3 p.m. on Thursday May 13.
