MARIST TAKES SERIES OPENER FROM RADFORD BASEBALL, 9-2

BOX SCORE BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va.
– Lefty starter Chad Gallagher tossed a complete-game six-hitter, and Marist rolled to a 9-2 series-opening win over Radford on Friday night.

Gallagher threw 104 pitches, struck out three and set down 15 of the first 17 batters to begin the game, improving his record to 2-2.  He didn't allow a runner to reach second base outside of a pair of home runs.

The only offense for the Highlanders (8-10) came from solo home runs – Jeff Kemp in the first inning and Matt Mack to lead off the seventh – each hit their first of the year.  Brett Mollenhauer went 2-for-4 with a pair of two-out hits.

Marist (4-8) scored five runs with two outs and used a three-run third to break the game open.  Ahead 2-1 in the third, the Red Foxes loaded the bases with and no one out before consecutive RBIs by Mark Brennan, Ben Luderer and Pat Welsh gave Marist a 5-1 lead.

Marist had 14 hits, and six players had multi-hit games.  Nick McQuail led the way with a pair of RBIs.

Jeff Maxwell, who came out of the bullpen for the Highlanders with the bases loaded in the third, put up scoreless frames for the next four innings, but Radford couldn't mount anything offensively.  Maxwell went 6 2/3 innings of relief, allowing three runs on six hits.

Right-handed starter Keith Fritz took the loss (2-2), lasting only into the third inning.

The series resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m.
