THREE HOMERS, TYLER COSTELLO LEAD BASEBALL PAST MARIST, 6-4

BOX SCORE BOX SCORE

RADFORD, Va.
Tyler Costello posted 7 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his third straight win, Zach Costello, Matt Mack and Matt Hillsinger each hit home runs, and Radford staved off a late Marist rally to earn a 6-4 win on Saturday.

Costello (3-0) extended his scoreless streak to 18 straight frames, dating back to a March 4 start at UNC Greensboro.   He struck out five batters and allowed only three hits, working into the eighth inning for his second consecutive start.

“I wish that everyone had Tyler's mentality out on the mound,” head coach Joe Raccuia said.  “He's a tough kid – he believes in his stuff and he believes in himself.  What we saw today was a kid not pitching with his best stuff, but getting results.”

Hillsinger went 2-for-4 with his third home run of the season to lead off the second and give the Highlanders (9-10) their first lead of the series.  Tyler's brother, Zach, hit a two-run blast (1) in the third, and Mack added a two-run homer (2) later in the inning, extending Radford's lead to 6-0.

Jeff Kemp reached three times for the Highlanders with a hit, two walks and a pair of stolen bases.

Marist (4-8) put four runs on the board in the ninth inning to make it a close game.  After pinch hitter Sam Berry led off with a single, Mark Stuckey hit a two-run homer two pitches later to get the Red Foxes on the board.

Marist then loaded the bases, before Abram Williams came out of the bullpen to get the final three outs for the Highlanders.   A double play scored a run to cut Radford's lead to three, then Nick McQuail's RBI single made it 6-4.

The Highlanders got the final out of the ninth with a close play at second on a ground ball hit to Kemp at shortstop, who made an under-handed toss to Josh Gardiner at second, barely beating McQuail to the base on a force out to end the game.

Chris Bielak went seven innings for the Red Foxes, but took the loss (0-1) after allowing all six Radford runs on eight hits.

The series resumes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
