HOVATTER & BETTS BREAK RECORDS AT BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior Phillip Hovatter and sophomore Joseph Betts led the way on day two of the Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships after breaking two school-records.

“Obviously we are are excited for Joseph and Phillip who had great performances today,” said head coach Brent Chumbley. “Those efforts are a result of their hard work and dedication.”

Hovatter finished fourth in the decathlon while breaking his own school-record with 6,106 points. He also earned a personal-record in the 110m hurdles after clocking 15.92 seconds.

Betts broke his own school-record in the preliminaries of the 200m dash with a time of 20.99 seconds, which advanced him to the finals tomorrow. Betts added a personal-record in the 100m prelims at 10.52 seconds while advancing to the finals tomorrow.


Senior Desi Simmons and sophomore Jazmine Banks both stepped up for the women after both shattered their previous personal-records in the shot put. Simmons placed fourth with a distance of 13.53m after not having a mark all season. Banks, who was ranked ninth coming in, finished seventh with a toss of 13.17m.

Junior Garrett Knudson took home fifth place in the shot put after a throw of 15.34m while senior Justin Smith finished eighth with a toss of 14.83m.

Sophomore Vincent Wyatt clocked in at 14.33 seconds in the 110m hurdles prelims to advance to the finals tomorrow. Wyatt finished second last year in this event. Freshman Devon Drake added a personal-record after clocking 15.87 seconds in the 110m hurdles. Drake also had a personal-record in the high jump with a clearance of 1.84m.

Wyatt also qualified for the finals in the 400m hurdles after posting 55.67 seconds in his first collegiate showing of the event. Junior David Green finished ninth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 56.83 seconds while freshman Shepley Burke took tenth with a time of 57.14 seconds.

Senior Kaise White also advanced to finals in the 400m tomorrow after clocking in at 49.51 seconds in the prelims. White was the runner-up last spring.

Sophomore Teresa Williamson ran a 4:52.02 in the 1500m prelims, which qualified her for tomorrow's finals.

Sophomore Jake Zimmerman added a personal-record in the 800m with a time of 1:56.67 while junior Chris Weeks also had a personal-record with a time of 1:59.33.

Junior Kaleice Green and freshman Madeline Harrover both recorded personal-records in the 100m after clocking in at 12.45 seconds and 13.26 seconds, respectively. Freshman Lora Wilson added a personal-record in the 200m with a time of 26.09 seconds.3

Junior Amber Church added a top-10 in the 100m hurdles after finishing ninth with a time of 14.52 seconds.

RU track and field returns to action tomorrow for the final day of the Big South Conference Outdoor. The first event is scheduled to go off at 10:00 a.m.
