GORWITZ BREAKS 5000m RECORD ON FINAL DAY OF BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior Brian Gorwitz highlighted the final day of the Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships when he broke the school-record in the 5000m run. The Highlanders also had several top-10 performances and personal-records set on the day.

The Radford men finished the Big South Championships in seventh place with 56 points while the women finished in tenth place with 23 points.

“A lot of tough breaks but a great effort overall,” head coach Brent Chumbley said. “Of course we are disappointed with our team finishes, but encouraged by our young athletes as they progress. We had several personal-records, we just need to add to our depth.”

The men were led by Gorwitz, who broke the school-record in the 5000m run with a time of 14:45.36. Sophomore Ryan Farnan finished seventh with a personal-record time of 14:46.44, which was the second fastest time at Radford. Gorwitz also took home fourth place in the 1500m run after clocking in at 3:58.97.

The women were led by sophomore Teresa Williamson brought home sixth place in the 1500m run after clocking in at 4:39.66, which is the third fastest time in program-history. Williamson then went onto add a tenth place finish in the 5000m run after a personal-record time of 17:59.29. That time is also the seventh fastest in school-history.

Sophomore Joseph Betts placed fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 21.25 seconds, which was the second fastest time in school-history. He added a fifth place finish in the 100m dash after clocking in at 10.80 seconds.

Senior Kaise White earned fourth in the 400m dash after clocking in at 48.16 seconds.

Freshman Cory Dunn had a personal-record distance of 13.94m in the triple jump while placing seventh.

Sophomore Vincent Wyatt added a fourth place finish in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.43 seconds. Wyatt went onto add a fifth place finish in the 400m hurdles after posting a personal-record time of 54.07 seconds.

The team of junior David Green, White, Betts and Wyatt took fifth in the 4x100m relay with a time of 41.95 seconds. For the 4x400m relay, the team of White, Green, Betts and junior Phillip Hovatter ran a time of 3:18.33, which was good for fifth place.

The combination of junior's Kaleice Green, Amber Church and Lakei Crews and senior Kayla Christian took fifth in the 4x100m relay with a time of 48.12 seconds, which is now the sixth fastest time recorded at Radford.

Sophomore Jamiecka Baker added a sixth place finish in the triple jump after a distance of 11.69m.

Senior Justin Smith added a top-10 finish in the discus throw after a toss of 41.49m.

RU track and field returns to action this Friday and Saturday, April 26-27 as they host the Highlander Invitational.
