SMITH, GORWITZ, BETTS & WYATT WIN ON FINAL DAY AT HIGHLANDER INVITE

RESULTS

RADFORD, Va. – Senior Justin Smith, junior Brian Gorwitz and sophomores Joseph Betts and Vincent Wyatt headlined the final day of the Highlander Invitational after capturing victories in their respective events.

“I think the throws went real well today,” said head coach Brent Chumbley. “The men's hammer was really a showcase with Marcel throwing 77m. It was a treat for everyone to see … From the track, we ran really well for there being a head wind all day … It's hard to come back the week after the conference championship, but we did well and look forward to Clemson next week.”

Smith captured a victory in the shot put after a toss of 15.96m, which is the seventh best toss at RU. Smith then took sixth in the discus with a distance of 42.99m. Junior Garrett Knudson added a sixth place in the shot put and seventh in the discus with distance's of 15.02m and 39.50m, respectively. Sophomore Jazmine Banks finished fourth on the women's side with a toss of 12.41m in the shot put.

Betts added a victory in the 200m dash with a time of 21.36 seconds, which is the eighth best time at Radford. Betts then took fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 10.85 seconds while freshman Victor Brew tallied a personal-record at 11.46 seconds. Junior Lakei Crews added a fourth place in the women's 100m dash with a time of 12.28 seconds while freshman Lora Wilson took fifth in the 200m with a time of 26.14 seconds.

Gorwitz brought home a win in the 1500m run with a time of 3:52.92 while junior Chris Weeks finished fourth with a personal-record time of 4:00.22.

Wyatt also captured a victory in the 110m hurdles with the sixth fastest time as a Highlander at 14.12 seconds. Freshman Devon Drake finished fifth with a personal-record time of 15.83 seconds. Sophomore Logan Shumaker tallied a fifth place in the 400m hurdles with a personal-record time of 56.60 seconds.

Sophomore Emily Marshall took second in the 1500m run while earning a personal-record time of 5:04.82. In the women's 800m run, RU had three personal-records and three top-10 finishers. Sophomore Teresa Williamson took fifth with a PR time of 2:17.27 while senior Maggie Wissler took sixth with a time of 2:19.44. Junior Katie Hickey finished with a PR of 2:22.99 while Marshall had a PR of 2:30.09.

Senior Kaise White finished second in the 400m dash after clocking in at 47.68 seconds, which is the ninth fastest mark at RU. For the women, freshman Danyelle McDaniel took third in the 400m dash with a personal-record time of 1:00.69.

Freshman Cory Dunn took fourth in the triple jump after a personal-record distance of 13.98m. Junior Phillip Hovatter finished fourth in the high jump with a personal-record clearance of 1.88m.

Freshman Ashlen Veatch finished third in the women's hammer after a toss of 52.67m while Banks finished sixth after shattering her personal-record with a distance of 45.35m. Sophomore Emmalane Hale took ninth with a toss of 40.66m while senior Desi Simmons finished tenth with a personal-record distance of 34.46m. Senior Curtis Hodge added a fifth place in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.45m. Also, a Cupp Stadium record was broken in the hammer throw when Marcel Lomnicky (unattached) had a toss of 77.06m.

For the last event of the day, Radford dueled against themselves in the 4x400m relay. The relay of Drake, Brew, Shumaker and freshman Shepley Burke won with a time of 3:29.10 while the relay of Weeks, junior Thomas Keefe, sophomore Ryan Farnan and freshman Daniel Moniak finished with a time of 3:31.27.

RU track & field returns to action on Friday and Saturday, May 3rd and 4th as they travel to the Clemson Relays.
